Smith & Wollensky stands out for its distinct exterior of deep green and white wood. Occupying a prominent corner in midtown Manhattan, this building has housed a steakhouse since eighteen ninety-seven, though it took its current name in nineteen seventy-seven. Alan Stillman, the founder, chose the name after pulling two unrelated surnames from a New York City phone book. He later revealed that Charlie and Ralph, the names once printed on the restaurant's early announcements, were actually his two dogs.
