La Carafe occupies a narrow, two-story brick structure on Congress Avenue that is recognized as one of the oldest commercial buildings in Houston. Built in eighteen forty-seven, the site originally housed the Kennedy Bakery, which provided hardtack biscuits to Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. While the city around it transformed into a landscape of modern skyscrapers, this building maintained its mid-nineteenth-century exterior.
