Main Plaza is a three-acre, trapezoidal public space characterized by a network of interactive fountains and thirty artistic floor pavers that tell the city's history. Established in seventeen thirty-one as the Plaza de las Islas Canarias, it served as the market square for the Canary Island settlers who founded the first civil government in Texas. Spanish urban planners designed the area in a grid, with the San Fernando Cathedral at the center of a cross formed by radiating streets.
