Its two-story, cut-stone foundation was laid in eighteen fifty-eight by German immigrants William and Maria Menger, who opened the establishment on January thirty-first, eighteen fifty-nine. The hotel sits directly adjacent to the Alamo, occupying a site where William Menger had previously operated a successful brewery.
