The Gunter Hotel rises above the intersection of North Saint Mary’s and East Houston Streets as a twelve-story structure of buff-colored brick. Opened on November twentieth, nineteen oh nine, it was designed by the St. Louis architectural firm Mauran, Russell, and Garden to be the most modern, upscale hotel in the city. The site itself holds a much older history, having served as an inn or hotel continuously since eighteen thirty-seven, just one year after the fall of the Alamo.
