Seattle Center Monorail

The Seattle Center Monorail is defined by a pair of concrete beams that carry trains high above the street, supported by y-shaped columns. This system was built for the nineteen sixty-two Century Twenty-One Exposition, a world’s fair that drew millions to the city. A West German company, ALWEG, funded and constructed the monorail at its own expense as a proof of concept for future transit. They bet that ticket sales would cover the cost of the three point five million dollar project, and the gamble paid off before the fair even concluded.
