The Bolands Centre occupies the corner of Lake and Spence Streets, distinguishable as a substantial three-story reinforced concrete structure that rises above its surroundings. Erected between nineteen twelve and nineteen thirteen, the building was designed by the local architect Edward Gregory Waters for Michael Boland, an Irish immigrant who rose to prominence as a Cairns merchant. At the time of its completion, it stood as the tallest building in the city and was among the first in the region to be constructed entirely of concrete, a material chosen for its durability against tropical weather and cyclones.
