The State Cinema on Elizabeth Street is distinguished by a contemporary glass wing that connects its original structure to a neighboring sandstone bookshop. Originally opened as the North Hobart Picture Palace in October nineteen thirteen, it stands as one of the oldest purpose-built cinemas in Tasmania. Behind the modern additions, the interior of the main screening room retains a pressed tin ceiling dating back to its first year of operation.
