Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is defined by its collection of heritage buildings, anchored by the eighteen-ten Commissariat Store, which is the oldest surviving public building in Hobart. Located on the waterfront, the institution grew from the efforts of the Royal Society of Tasmania, the oldest royal society outside of England, established in eighteen forty-three. Its first permanent building, designed by architect Henry Hunter, opened on the corner of Argyle and Macquarie streets in eighteen sixty-three.
