Constitution Dock

Constitution Dock is a rock-walled basin in Sullivans Cove, identified by the fishing fleet and pleasure craft bobbing against its piers. It was constructed between eighteen forty-seven and eighteen fifty under the direction of Governor William Denison, who utilized convict labor to excavate rubble and quarry stone from the surrounding area. He named the basin for the Australian Constitutions Act of eighteen fifty, which provided for an elected parliament in what was then the colony of Van Diemen’s Land.
