Kelly's Steps

Kelly’s Steps are a set of sandstone stairs carved directly into the cliffside to form a vertical shortcut between the waterfront of Salamanca Place and the residential streets of Battery Point. Built in eighteen thirty-nine by the explorer and whaler James Kelly, these stairs provided a direct route for the many dockworkers, shipwrights, and sailors who lived in the cottages above and labored in the warehouses below.
