Hope & Anchor

The Hope and Anchor stands on Macquarie Street, a colonial-era building with a Georgian facade that often sparks debate about its place in Australian history. First opened in eighteen oh seven by Thomas Hopkins under the name The Whale Fishery, the pub holds one of the country's oldest liquor licenses. Its position near the original waterfront once made it a hub for sailors and traders, and local stories persist of smugglers rolling barrels of rum from the Hobart Rivulet directly into the tavern's cellar under the cover of night.
