The John Batman memorial is a tall bluestone obelisk that stands near the edge of the Queen Victoria Market parking area. Erected by public subscription in eighteen eighty-one, the monument honors the man who led an eighteen thirty-five expedition from Van Diemen’s Land to the Port Phillip District. Batman is often called a founder of Melbourne, having famously written "this will be the place for a village" in his journal as he explored the Yarra River.
