St James’ Old Cathedral

religious

St James’ Old Cathedral is the oldest surviving church building in Melbourne. You can identify it by its Colonial Georgian architecture, constructed of sandstone with bluestone foundations, standing on the corner of King and Batman streets. The foundation stone was laid in eighteen thirty-nine by Charles La Trobe, the superintendent of the Port Phillip District, when the settlement was only four years old.
