East Block

The East Block is distinguished by its asymmetrical silhouette, towered profile, and exterior walls of textured Nepean sandstone decorated with carvings of gargoyles and grotesques. Designed by architects Thomas Stent and Augustus Laver in the High Victorian Gothic Revival style, this building was completed in eighteen sixty-five to house government ministries and the offices of prime ministers. It stands as one of the few structures on Parliament Hill that has remained largely intact since its original construction.
