Parliament Hill occupies a limestone bluff above the Ottawa River, defined by its three Gothic Revival buildings of rough-hewn sandstone. Originally known as Barrack Hill when it hosted military quarters for the Rideau Canal, the site was repurposed in eighteen fifty-nine after Queen Victoria selected Ottawa as the capital of the Province of Canada. The resulting complex became the seat of the federal government, with construction concluding in eighteen seventy-six.
