Bytown Museum

The Bytown Museum occupies a squat, three-story limestone building that sits directly beside the Ottawa Locks of the Rideau Canal. This structure, known as the Commissariat, dates back to eighteen twenty-seven and holds the distinction of being the oldest stone building in Ottawa. Its thick masonry walls and symmetrical Georgian design were originally intended for utility rather than display, as the site served as the primary storehouse and military supply depot during the canal's arduous construction.
