ByWard Market Square is defined by its central, multi-story market building, a structure that has occupied this specific site since eighteen twenty-six. Lieutenant-Colonel John By, the engineer tasked with building the Rideau Canal, established the market to supply the workers and settlers of what was then known as Bytown. He funded the first timber market building by collecting rents from nearby properties he leased in Lower Town.
