Laurier House is a large, Second Empire style residence distinguished by its expansive verandah that wraps around the front and side of the building. Built in eighteen seventy-eight for an Ottawa jeweler, this home became the private residence of two Canadian Prime Ministers, Sir Wilfrid Laurier and William Lyon Mackenzie King. Because Canada lacked official residences for its leaders at the time, this house provided both men with a place to live and a venue to host international dignitaries, including Winston Churchill and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
