Rideau Canal, Locks 1 - 8 - Ottawa

The Rideau Canal flight of locks consists of eight limestone chambers rising seventy-nine feet from the Ottawa River to reach the higher ground of the canal. This staircase marks the northern gateway of the waterway, which the British military commissioned between eighteen twenty-six and eighteen thirty-two to establish a secure supply route after the War of eighteen twelve.
