The ByWard Market is distinguished by the unusual width of its streets, a layout designed in the eighteen twenties to accommodate horse-drawn wagons, carts, and the crowds of a bustling commercial center. It was established by Lieutenant-Colonel John By, the engineer who oversaw the construction of the nearby Rideau Canal. He drained a dense cedar bog here to create a non-military sector for the workers building the canal, separating it from the more formal Upper Town.
