The Baluarte de Santo Domingo is a pentagonal fortification that marks the start of the massive stone walls encircling Cartagena de Indias. Its thick, elevated masonry stands where the English privateer Francis Drake once led his forces into the city in fifteen eighty-six. That raid caught the town without proper defenses, prompting Spanish authorities to commission military engineers Battista Antonelli and his nephew Cristóbal de Roda to secure this vulnerable approach.
