Las Bóvedas is a long, bright yellow structure defined by forty-seven arches and twenty-three vaulted chambers set directly into the thick stone of Cartagena's northern city walls. Built between seventeen ninety-two and seventeen ninety-eight, this was the final major construction project of the Spanish colonial era within the city’s fortified perimeter. Engineer Antonio de Arévalo designed the complex to serve as bombproof military storerooms for munitions and provisions, ensuring the city could endure long sieges.
