Calle de la Factoría is recognizable by its narrow, high-walled colonial architecture and the long, rhythmic line of wooden balconies that stretch over the cobblestones. Running north from the Plaza de Santo Domingo, this street takes its name from a grim chapter of the colonial era. During the seventeenth century, the Portuguese Company of Cacheu maintained a slave-trading outpost here, directly across from what is now the Marquis de Valdehoyos house.
