Republic Square

Republic Square, or Prokurative as it is locally known, is a rectangular open-air space defined by continuous neo-Renaissance arcades on three sides. Its most striking feature is the southern side, which stands completely open to the sea, causing the entire plaza to face the harbor like a stage. These red-toned buildings were commissioned in the mid-nineteenth century by Mayor Antonio Bajamonti, who intended to transform Split into a city of the future with architecture modeled after the style of Saint Mark’s Square in Venice.
