The remaining walls Lazareta

The remaining walls of the Lazareta stand as a silent marker of Split’s former role as a major trade hub between the Venetian Republic and the Ottoman Empire. Built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, this complex was designed to facilitate the inspection of goods and the quarantine of merchants arriving from foreign ports. A Sephardic merchant from Portugal named Daniel Rodriga originally proposed the project, envisioning a secure site that would encourage commerce while shielding the city from infectious diseases.
