The Golden Gate is the most ornate entrance to the Roman ruins of Diocletian’s Palace, identifiable by its massive stone archway and the empty niches that once held statues of the emperor and the tetrarchs. Built at the turn of the fourth century, this northern portal served as the ceremonial entry point for Emperor Diocletian when he arrived from his nearby birthplace of Salona to live in his retirement palace.
