Iron Gate

The Iron Gate is marked by a clock tower featuring a face with twenty-four digits instead of the standard twelve. As the western entrance to Diocletian’s Palace, this structure, originally known as the Porta Occidentalis, has remained in continuous use since it was constructed in the fourth century. While the other three gates of the palace experienced periods of closure or abandonment, this portal maintained its role as a functional passage through every transformation of the city.
