Gregory of Nin Statue

monument

You will recognize the Gregory of Nin statue by its immense, towering presence and the striking bronze sheen on its big toe, worn smooth by years of visitors. Standing eight and a half meters tall, this figure represents a tenth-century bishop who challenged the Catholic Church by advocating for religious services to be conducted in the local Croatian language rather than Latin. The sculptor, Ivan Meštrović, completed the work in nineteen twenty-nine, originally placing it inside the heart of Diocletian’s Palace.
