Venetian Tower

You will recognize the Venetian Tower by its distinctive octagonal shape and the stone crenellations lining its top. Located in what is now known as Fruit Square, this tower is the most prominent survivor of a fortress built by the Republic of Venice starting in fourteen thirty-five. While the city of Split came under Venetian control in fourteen twenty, it was not until over a decade later that the authorities commissioned this castle to secure the harbor and bolster their influence over the local population.
