Bastion Contarini (Sveti Jerolim)

The Bastion Contarini, also known as the Sveti Jerolim bastion, survives today as a stone remnant of the massive defensive system that once ringed the city of Split. In the seventeenth century, the Venetian Republic built five of these star-shaped bastions to protect the port and the old city from the threat of Ottoman invasion. These fortifications were massive projects, consisting of stone walls filled with earth, and they completely transformed the city's perimeter during the War of Candia.
