Split Synagogue

The Split Synagogue occupies the second floor of two connected medieval houses built directly into the western wall of Diocletian’s Palace. This Orthodox Sephardic site, established in the sixteenth century on a narrow passage known as the Židovski Prolaz, ranks among the oldest continuously functioning synagogues in the world. Its location within the ancient palace walls reflects the history of a community that found refuge here after the Roman city of Salona was destroyed in the seventh century.
