Brass Gate (Porta Aenea)

The Brass Gate, known in Latin as the Porta Aenea, serves as the southern entrance to the palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Unlike the more ornate gates facing land, this entrance was originally a modest, water-level opening that led directly into the subterranean basement halls. When the palace was completed in three hundred five AD, there was no promenade along this southern wall; instead, the sea reached the base of the structure, allowing supply vessels to unload goods directly into the palace foundations.
