Christianshavns Torv is the central square of this district, easily identified by the wide, open intersection where the busy street Torvegade crosses the historic canal system. Planned in sixteen seventeen by the Dutch engineer Johan Semp for King Christian the Fourth, it occupies what was once the highest point on the original island of Refshalen.
