La Maison des Canuts occupies a building that once served as the headquarters for the Weavers and Weavers' Union in the nineteenth century. This site on the Croix-Rousse hill preserves the history of the Lyonnais silk workers, known as canuts, whose skills in weaving gold, silver, and silk threads made Lyon a global powerhouse of the industry. The name canut itself likely comes from the French word for the bobbin, or spool, used to hold silk thread during production.
