You can recognize Méert by its ornate, neo-Moorish front, which features striking woodwork, gilded details, and mirrors. Established in seventeen sixty-one on Rue Esquermoise, this confectionery is among the oldest pastry shops in the world still in operation. While it began as a shop under Monsieur Delcourt, it gained its current name and identity when the Belgian confectioner Michael Paulus Gislinus Méert took over in eighteen forty-nine.
