The Cimetière des Lilas occupies a high point overlooking the plain of Pantin, with views stretching toward Paris and the Sacré-Cœur. Established in eighteen sixty-eight, only a year after the commune of Les Lilas was created from territory taken from neighboring towns, it sits on land once used for mining gypsum. Because the town was new, this cemetery had to be built from scratch to serve its earliest residents.
