The Folie Saint-James in Neuilly-sur-Seine is defined by its massive, artificial rock formation, a stack of sandstone blocks transported from the Forest of Fontainebleau in the late eighteenth century. Originally commissioned between seventeen seventy-seven and seventeen eighty by Claude Baudard de Saint-James, the treasurer of the French Navy, the estate was designed by architect François-Joseph Bélanger. The owner famously instructed his architect to build whatever he desired, provided it was expensive.
