The Musée national des Arts et Traditions Populaires occupies an austere, functional building designed by architect Jean Dubuisson on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne. Opened in nineteen seventy-two, the structure sits on the site of a former palmarium within the Jardin d'Acclimatation. For decades, it functioned as a laboratory for ethnologists, documenting the material life of French rural and artisan societies from the nineteenth century through the nineteen sixties.
