Place de l'Église

historic

Place de l’Église is defined by the stone facade of the Église Saint-Germain, the town’s oldest building. The square itself holds a bi-weekly market that has served residents here for generations, occupying the space where a village first emerged during the Gallo-Roman period. While the area retains remnants of its history, the surrounding blocks were largely redesigned in the nineteen fifties by architect Denis Honegger. His plan replaced older, weathered dwellings with modern concrete housing, characterized by a grid of visible beams and geometric stairwell grilles.
