The Hôpital Saint-Louis is defined by its seventeenth-century brick-and-stone architecture, which mirrors the design of the Place des Vosges with its uniform pavilions and steep slate roofs. Founded in sixteen oh seven on the orders of King Henry the Fourth, the institution was originally built outside the city walls to quarantine and treat victims during a devastating plague epidemic. Its four wings were constructed to enclose a large, rectangular courtyard, creating a secure environment that isolated the sick from the rest of the city.
