Lariboisière Hospital stands out for its symmetrical layout of ten pavilions arranged in a double-comb pattern, designed in the nineteenth century to prioritize light and air. Opened in eighteen fifty-four, this sprawling medical complex was commissioned to improve public health in the northern part of Paris following devastating cholera outbreaks in the eighteen thirties. The buildings were constructed according to strict hygienist principles, which aimed to prevent the spread of infection by separating wards with colonnaded walkways and open courtyards.
