Theatre of the Oppressed

The Théâtre de l'Opprimé occupies a converted furniture warehouse at seventy-eight Rue du Charolais, recognizable by the industrial character of the space. It serves as the home for a troupe dedicated to a method of performance developed in the nineteen seventies by the Brazilian director Augusto Boal. This approach turns the traditional audience into what Boal called spect-actors, people who can interrupt a play to suggest different actions or take the place of a character on stage to explore ways of resolving social conflicts.
