The Monument de la Défense nationale stands on the Place de Fontenoy, recognizable by its tall, upright obelisk positioned near the gates of the École Militaire. Inaugurated in eighteen eighty-nine, this stone pillar was created by the architect Jules Hallais to honor the French soldiers of the army and navy who died during the Franco-Prussian War of eighteen seventy to eighteen seventy-one.
