The Vélodrome d'Hiver, or Vél d'Hiv, once occupied the space on rue Nélaton as a major indoor sports arena. Inaugurated in nineteen oh nine, its banked wooden track hosted six-day bicycle races, boxing matches, and circuses. It was the first permanent indoor stadium in France, defined by a massive glass roof that was eventually painted blue to comply with wartime blackout regulations.
