Square Louise Michel

Square Louise Michel extends up the southern slope of Montmartre in a series of terraced gardens, defined by two hundred and twenty steps that climb toward the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. The terrain here was once a network of gypsum quarries, which caused unstable ground and delayed the completion of the park for decades. Engineers had to stabilize the hillside before architect Jean-Camille Formigé could lay out the paths and greenery that visitors walk today.
