The Basilique Notre-Dame de la Daurade is defined by a massive neoclassical stone facade featuring an antique portico and tall columns. It sits along the banks of the Garonne, a site occupied by religious buildings since the fifth century. The name comes from the Latin Deaurata, or gilded, referring to the shimmering gold mosaics that once lined the apse of the original structure, which may have served as the chapel for Visigothic kings.
