The Place du Capitole is defined by a massive, one hundred twenty-eight-meter neoclassical façade built of pink brick and stone. This long frontage, completed around seventeen sixty by architect Guillaume Cammas, is punctuated by eight distinct columns of pink marble. Each column stands in honor of one of the original eight capitouls, the elected magistrates who governed Toulouse as a self-governing commune for centuries, beginning in the twelfth century.
