Pont Neuf

landmark

The Pont Neuf is a stone bridge spanning the Garonne River with seven asymmetrical arches and thick piers featuring circular openings. While its name translates to "New Bridge," it is the oldest standing bridge in Toulouse. Construction began in fifteen forty-four under the direction of the city's governing consuls and King Francis the First, who intended for the structure to facilitate the movement of troops toward Spain. The project took nearly nine decades to complete, finally opening to traffic in sixteen thirty-two.
