The Basilique Saint-Sernin is distinguished by its towering octagonal bell tower and its construction from local pink-hued red clay bricks. As one of the largest preserved Romanesque churches in Europe, the building was designed to accommodate the heavy flow of medieval pilgrims traveling toward Santiago de Compostela. Its massive, cruciform structure and wide ambulatory allowed travelers to move through the space to venerate relics without disturbing ongoing liturgical services.
